Passing The Torch

Just six years ago there were a record number, 6, professional hockey players hailing from Newfoundland & Labrador suiting up on the regular in the NHL. Fast forward to the present and there are currently none.

Picked up this 2011-12 Elite 'Passing The Torch' card.

Dan Cleary rose to local legend status in 1998 as a member of the Detroit Red Wings when he became the first Newfoundlander to ever have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup.

Ryane Clowe was a valuable piece of the Sharks franchise during his time with San Jose. 3rd in points by a NL NHL player with fewest games played.

  1. Wow that declined quickly. Anyone you're aware of that's a highly touted prospect right now that may end the drought soon?

    1. Evan Fitzpatrick seems to be the only prospect at the moment that could possibly see some action in the NHL. He is a netminder who was picked 59th overall at the 2016 Draft by the Blues and currently plays in the QMJHL.

  2. Any thoughts for the reason why the province struggles making it to the NHL?

    1. To be brutally honest, we don't have players who are good enough. We also have fewer players in the province compared to larger centres.
